Research achievements

Research summary

The overarching aim of Dr. Maruf's research program (Pharmacogenomics Knowledge to Action - PGxK2A Lab) is to facilitate the development, evaluation, and implementation of evidence-informed precision medicine initiatives using quantitative and qualitative methodologies and implementation science techniques. The lab conducts cutting-edge research to bring clinical innovation into practice by reducing the knowledge-to-practice gap.

Dr. Maruf's research program is collaborative and follows a teacher-scholar model that involves scholarly activities with students from various levels, innovative teaching approaches, and service activities to the institution, the profession, and the society.

Current research priorities:

  • Pharmacogenomic and pharmacovigilance studies to understand inter-individual variation in medication response.
  • Patient-oriented research to optimize precision health/medicine tools for diverse population.
  • Knowledge translation, implementation, and educational research to help expand the scope of pharmacy practice to evidence-based precision medicine.

  • P = Positive reinforcement (connecting contents with practice)
  • P = Passionate about teaching (passion for professional competency)
  • O = Organized (organized and interactive lectures)

Biography

Dr. Maruf is currently a tenure-track assistant professor of clinical pharmacogenomics at the University of Manitoba College of Pharmacy. He is a pharmacist by training and earned a master’s degree in clinical pharmacy and a PhD in pharmacology and toxicology.

Dr. Maruf was instrumental in launching Canada’s first pharmacogenomic testing service (PGx-SParK) in Western Canada. This service aims to improve pharmacotherapy outcomes in children and young adults receiving care for mental disorders.

Dr. Maruf is the founder and current director of the Precision Medicine Research and Education Hub (PRECISE CARE HUB) at the College of Pharmacy. The hub aims to co-develop pharmacist-led educational materials and facilitate the implementation of pharmacogenomic testing into pharmacy practice. Such a pharmacogenomics hub is the first of its kind in any Canadian pharmacy program.

He is currently leading the first study in Manitoba, PGx-SUPPORT (Pharmacogenomics-Supported Psychotropic Prescribing Trial), to implement a patient-centred pharmacogenomic testing service for patients receiving care for mental disorders. He is also the Manitoba site lead of the Pan-GEM (Pan-Canadian Initiative Linking Genomic, Environmental, and Mental Health Data in Children and Youth), funded by Genome Canada’s Precision Health Initiative.

Since joining the University of Manitoba, Dr. Maruf has secured approximately $23 million in peer-reviewed and philanthropic funding as a principal investigator or part of several national research team.
