Awards to UM faculty and students since 2020
- Professor Julien Arino was voted as one of four CBC Radio Canada Scientists of the Year in 2020 for his work on modelling the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Professor Julien Arino was awarded the Faculty of Science Research Chair 2021 to 2023.
- Professor Raphael Clouatre won the 2021 Terry G. Falconer Memorial Rh Institute Foundation Emerging Researcher Award in the Natural Sciences category.
- Professor Adam Clay won the 2021 Merit Award for service.
- Professor Darja Barr won the 2021 Merit Award for promoting Indigenous achievement.
- Professor Mikael Slevinsky won the 2022 Terry G. Falconer Memorial Rh Institute Foundation Emerging Researcher Award in the Natural Sciences category.
- Professor Varvara Shepelska won the 2022 Merit Award for teaching.
- Professor Adam Clay was awarded a 2023 Simons CRM Professorship.

- Marshall Kaatz (4th year in Math) received one of two Faculty of Science awards for Excellence in Teaching Assistance in 2024.

- Professor Stephanie Portet is a co-director of the PIMS Research Network Maud Menten Institute from 2024 to 2027.
- Hermie Monterde (PhD Candidate) won the 2024 Dean of Graduate Studies Student
Achievement Award. - Professor Darja Barr was awarded the 2025 PIMS Education Prize.
- Professor Andriy Prymak received one of the 2025 Students' Teacher Recognition Awards Reception, the award that celebrates teaching excellence, chosen by Jaskaran Singh, our Honours math graduate.
- Professor Adam Clay was awarded a 2025 Simons CRM Professorship.
UM Mathematics Department distinctions:
- Top 10 Canadian mathematics departments, according to 2021 MacLean’s Magazine.
- Top 10 Canadian math departments and ranked 201-300 in the world, according to the 2023 Shanghai Ranking.
- Ranked 7th among Canadian math departments according to the 2024-2025 US News and World Report.
Math conferences and workshops held in Winnipeg since 2020:
- The Ninth Canadian Discrete and Algorithmic Mathematics Conference (CanaDAM) June 5-8, 2023 was organized by Professor Karen Gunderson with assistance from Dr. Andrii Arman (PIMS PDF), Hermie Monterde (PhD candidate) and Dr. Mahsa Shirazi (PIMS PDF).
- The Sixth Conference on Computational and Mathematical Population Dynamics, May 23 to 27, was organized by Professors Julien Arino, Kang-Ling Liao and Stephanie Portet.
- The UM chapter of the Association of Women in Mathematics (AWM) held an AWM Symposium on November 16, 2023. Hermie Monterde (PhD candidate) was the principal organizer.
- The Summer School on Quantitative Molecular and Cellular Biology was held at the
University of Manitoba from June 16 to 27, 2024. Professors Kang-Ling Liao, Margherita Ferrari and Stephanie Portet were instructors. - The conference Operator Analysis on Function Spaces was held at the University of
Manitoba on June 13 to 15, 2025. Drs. Poornendu Kumar and Jeet Sampat were the organizers. - The 3MC-PIMS-IDMS-ICMS Summer School on Quantitative Molecular and Cellular
Biology was held at the University of Manitoba on June 16 to 27, 2025. Professors Julien Arino and Stephanie Portet were organizers and instructors.
